Gallery Label
Emmet Gowin is one of the most important and influential artists of his generation, both as a photographer and as a teacher. He studied with Harry Callahan at the Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1960s and for many years has headed the photography program at Princeton University. Gowin came to national recognition in the early 1970s for his intimate and mysterious images of his immediate family. Since then, he has expanded the range of his interests to poetic and provocative vignettes of the natural and cultural landscape. All his work is characterized by a devotion to both the importance of what he depicts and the inherent beauty of the photographic process.
