DescriptionImage of a woman, carrying a purse, walking down the sidewalk with a small child following behind her.Gallery LabelThis image of a woman and child on the streets of San Francisco conveys Dorothea Lange’s abiding interest in relationships between people. She began exploring the subject early in her career when she travelled throughout the country on government-sponsored assignments to document poverty during the Great Depression and the imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II. After the war, Lange photographed closer to home in San Francisco, as travel became difficult after she began to suffer from the long-term effects of polio, which she contracted as a child.
