DescriptionImage of Crow delegates seated in an arc and Peace Commissioners to their left, most standing.Exhibition HistoryAcross the Indian Country: Photographs by Alexander Gardner, 1867-1868. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, July 25, 2014 - January 11, 2015, Jane L. Aspinwall, Alexander Gardner The Western Photographs, 1867 – 1868, 2014, sic no. 9.
After his career as a prominent Civil War photographer, Alexander Gardner became the official photographer for what is now called the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Formed in 1824, this government agency negotiated peace treaties between the US Government and tribal leaders. Pictured here is one such gathering, in May 1868, between US officials from the Indian Peace Commission and Crow (Apsáalooke Nation) leaders, who are seated in a circle on the ground.
