Gallery LabelIn his Lyme Regis images, James Abbott McNeill Whistler created a portrait of a place. He drew in the town’s streets, and at times, the damp sea air threatened the images he was creating. After three months working in the coastal resort town, he felt he had absorbed the place. Whistler wrote, “Having eagerly desired to live in Lyme for a thousand years, and having had that desire gratified to the uttermost, I now am satisfied—and am willing to leave Lyme—desiring indeed never to set eyes upon it again—I long for Lyme no more!”
