Japanese-American photographers made important contributions to the artistic exhibitions and publications of the 1920s. Most of these artists lived on the West Coast, from Seattle to southern California. Kentaro Nakamura was a leading member of the Japanese Camera Pictorialists of California, based in Los Angeles. One of the most celebrated art photographs of the day, the work exhibited here was reproduced in leading photographic journals in the United States, Britain, Germany and Russia. Evening Wave represents an eloquent blend of naturalism and abstraction-a suggestion, somewhat paradoxically, of both tranquility and power.
