In Innocence and Guilt, William Wegman presents his canine collaborators as symbolic representations of “good dog” and “bad dog.” Sitting on pedestals and cloaked in black, the two dogs convey near identical attitudes, leaving the viewer to discern what might account for their assigned innocence and guilt. Wegman’s 20 x 24- inch Polaroid prints of his Weimaraners—Man Ray, Fay, and her offspring—parody real or imagined motifs from art history, humorously subverting the traditions of Euro-American portraiture.
