Saint John the Baptist

The partially
defaced inscription at the base of the statue, OPVS TITIA...I F., long
ago led to the mistaken assumption that the sculpture was made by Tiziano
Aspetti (1565–1607), a Paduan sculptor much influenced by Tuscan Mannerism. It
seems, however, to have been made much earlier than possible for Aspetti and
the logical assumption is that the sculptor was Tiziano Minio, a follower of
Jacopo Sansovino (1486–1570). The haggard, exhausted aspect of
