DescriptionThe fan-shaped drawing illustrates the Academy of Louis XIV, in which various subjects were taught, including architecture, mathematics, geography, medicine and painting, among others. Multiple figures dressed in loosely draped clothing are clustered around numerous scientific instruments. The figures and equipment are scattered on varying levels in an open courtyard area surrounded by classical architecture characterized by arched entrances and Corinthian columns. In the center of the composition, a globe appears surrounded by figures. In the left foreground, figures are gathered around a large illustration containing various coats-of-arms and mathematical configurations. On the left is an arched entrance to a library; in the right foreground appears a large urn containing flowers which is placed on the top of a half-column.Exhibition History
