DescriptionRiver scene with thirteen figures; four in water, six on boats, and three on shore; mountains in background, gate and boats moored at left.Gallery LabelOperas featuring military romance were very fashionable in ancient China, and print workshops created large prints to meet popular demand. As in action movies today, heroes and villains represent good and evil, and excitement is conveyed through the action of the characters. These two opera stories are based on popular novels that, in turn, reference actual historic events. Today, these novels are still the basis of many Chinese television and movie dramas.
