Gallery LabelThis gigantic rock floating on a churning sea represents an otherworldly realm. According to Daoist scripture, the Fanghu (Square Jar) is a sacred island of the immortals located off the east coast of China. Notice the palatial buildings, verdant pine forest, and resting cranes. These details signal longevity and immortality. In the inscription, Wang Yun refers to his Daoist friend Old Crane, who may have instructed him to paint this scene.
