Fairs, where people came to trade and to enjoy themselves from far and wide, were a vital part of life in the 17th century. The fair at Gondreville was associated with the month of May, and towards the left, maidens can be seen presenting seasonal flowering branches to an elegant couple. Note the way the huge tree casts a protective shadow over the crowd.
