Water Jug and Goblets, about 1848
Enamel on glass
The water lilies on this jug and these goblets illustrate two key British design principles of the 1800s: naturalistic ornament and a union of function and decoration. Indicating the water vessels’ purpose, the designer adorned them with aquatic plants. Manufacturers of utilitarian articles, especially those intended for domestic use, made an effort to improve the aesthetic quality of English product designs.
