DescriptionImage of an older woman seated behind a younger girl who has her head tilted back; the woman lays her hands on the girl's head.Exhibition HistoryTreasure of Mexico in Kansas City. The Consulate of Mexico, Kansas City, MO, April 16 – July 16, 2012, no cat.
Rotation 24. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, June 9 – November 12, 2017, no cat.
This photograph pairs two women from different generations. The older woman’s hands rest on the head of a girl, a gesture that communicates the matriarchal and communal aspects of Zapotec life. Graciela Iturbide made this photograph when she lived with Indigenous communities in southern Oaxaca, Mexico, between 1979 and 1988. In images such as this, Iturbide conveys everyday intimacies and the enduring strength of a culture.
