DescriptionThis mask in the the form of a human face. It is concave, with a protruding forehead and chin. Resin creates the hairstyle; the forehead is high; the slit eyes are arched; the ears project from each side of the head; the triangular nose, in high relief, has shallowly carved nostrils; and the projecting, open lips are pierced with a hole in the center. The entire mask is pierced by small holes around the perimeter.ProvenanceAcquired on the London art market by Dr. Ira Solomon (1877-1943) and Saida Rigby (1879-1971) Wile, New York, NY, ca. 1925-1971 [1];

[1] According to Ethan Hirsh, in documentation provided at the time of the object’s donation and email correspondence with MacKenzie Mallon, Specialist, Provenance, May-June 2022, copies in NAMA curatorial files, this mask was acquired in London by Hirsh’s grandparents during their time living abroad and remained in the family until Hirsh’s gift to the Nelson-Atkins.
