DescriptionA long bar of aluminum, 4 inches by 4 inches runs horizontally for 161 inches. Underneath is are multiple units of bluish purple aluminum in variable dimensions, arranged at various intervals.Gallery LabelIn Untitled (Progression), the blue rectangular forms and the spaces between them are inversely proportional to one another. As the form dimensions are halved, the spaces between them double. This arrangement reflects Minimalist artist Donald Judd's preference for simple, nominal progressions.
Judd's goal, a strategy that defines Minimalism, is to eliminate every trace of the artist's hand and every vestige of content, leaving only the object. To that end, he designed sculptures that were fabricated by others. By leaving his sculptures untitled, he furthered their anonymity. This desire to create emotionless art was a reaction against the heightened emotional pitch of Abstract Expressionism.
