Artist’s inscription:
“I painted what I saw in a dream. A friend [sees it and] says, ‘The shores of the lakes in my [hometown] Zhe frequently have spots like this.’”

Gong Xian uses dense and watery ink to evoke a dreamlike landscape viewed from the slope of a hill. Whether real or unreal, as his inscription implies, the scene conveys his sublime vision of landscape.

In his 50s, Gong moved to the scenic mountains in the suburbs of Nanjing, where he created this leaf in an album and another on view nearby.
