Gallery LabelUsing peasants as subject matter was inspired by the artists of the Newlyn School in Cornwall in the late 1800s. This group of artists, like the Impressionists, specialized in painting rustic scenes with large figures out-of-doors. Here the contrasts of light and shade are simplified, recalling Édouard Manet’s work from the previous generation in France.
