Gallery LabelJames Abbott McNeill Whistler traveled to Lyme Regis, England, from Paris in the fall of 1895. While there, Whistler created portraits of those around him, including John Grove, the landlord of the hotel where Whistler and his wife stayed. He explored light and shadow in these images, which he made using lithographic transfer drawing. He first drew on treated paper that was then sent to his printer in London for transfer onto lithography stones for printing.
