DescriptionLeft side of a diptych or triptych. A woman (the courtesan Okaru) sitting on the bench of a balcony spies upon a man (the hero, Yuranosuke) who is standing on an elevated porch reading a long scrolling letter. Another man (the evil spy Kudayu) is wearing a pair of glasses and hides under the veranda looking at them. On the porch, there are a wash basin, a towel and a blue lantern hung in a pine tree.
