This small engraving conveys the atmosphere of love and seduction typical of life at the French court under the Ancien Regime, a social and political structure dominated by wealthy aristocrats. The wooded setting evokes the pastoral poetry of ancient Roman poets like Virgil, who memorably described the loves of shepherds and shepherdesses.
