Gallery Label
Tiepolo was the greatest Venetian artist of the 18th century. At that time, Venice had strong trading connections with the Middle East, and exotic Oriental figures often appear as bystanders in Tiepolo's religious or mythological paintings. In this example the vitality of the figure is effectively conveyed by Tiepolo's skillful application of warm, semi-transparent washes. Observed at close range, they appear almost abstract; seen from a few feet away, they describe the shape of this man's fur hat and high-collared coat with precision and simplicity.
