DescriptionIndigo-dyed cotton with stencil dyeing. Overcoat (hanten type) with bold design of bamboo.Gallery LabelHanten is a type of overcoat worn by workers such as carpenters and gardeners. The bold and fashionable bamboo design of this hanten suggests the high spirit of its wearer. The bamboo motif (a symbol of endurance and good luck) filling the design signals that the coat may have been made for a special occasion, such as the completion of a commissioned project.
Laborers in Japan often worked as a group. The large symbol at the top identifies the worker’s squad.
