Ferguson was a Canadian-born, naturalized American who was ordained as a pastor and undertook a mission in China. He was instrumental in the founding of Nanking and Jiaotong Universities, served as an advisor to the Chinese government in numerous capacities, and was a well-known scholar and collector of Chinese art.
