DescriptionPierre Biard the Younger, A SlaveExhibition HistoryThirty Years of Print Purchases for the Permanent Collection, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, November 19 - December 31, 1989, no. 12.
Biard's print is based on two of six sculptures of prisoners (sometimes called slaves) that Michelangelo designed for the lower level of the tomb of Pope Julius II (1443-1513) in the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. It is not a faithful reproduction of either model, and Biard has added drapery. The face of the captive is the embodiment of angry defiance.
