NOTES:

[1] A black stamp inside the book matches an 18th-century stamp used by the Universitätsbibliothek Tübingen. See Antonius Jammers, ed. Bibliotheksstempel (Berlin: Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz, 1998), 196.

[2] An inscription inside the book reads: “Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Flower, from their affectionate W. H. Smyth, Donau Amicita, 20-7-’61.” Smyth was a founder of the Royal Geographical Society and a member of numerous scientific organizations in London. Sir William Henry Flower was Director of the National History Museum and President of the Royal Zoological Society in London.

[3] The Library Book Company was owned by Frank Glenn, who opened this shop—one of his several bookselling enterprises—on March 6, 1933. His letterhead lists locations at 312 Ward Parkway in Kansas City, as well as 25 Cockspur St. in London. According to a letter from Glenn to Nelson-Atkins Trustee J. C. Nichols, July 25, 1933, Nelson-Atkins Registration Files, this book was part of a collection Glenn had on consignment. The identity of the consignor is currently unknown.
