NOTES:

[1] Mabel Ruth Nowlin was a Methodist missionary in China from 1915 to 1957, where she taught at the Methodist Mission School in Changli and wrote a series of Chinese-language textbooks. Upon her return to the United States, she lived in Kansas City until 1970.
