This view of the façade of the church of St. Etienne at Caen in Normandy shows the artist’s skill in rendering complex architectural detail, which he cleverly throws into relief with rich shadow. The dark doorway draws the spectator in towards the shadowy interior. French cathedrals and churches had long been a favorite subject for British artists. The way the view is taken from close up and slightly cropped looks similar to the effects favored by photographers.
