Cornelis Visscher achieved acclaim during his short-lived career for his highly finished portraits and scenes of daily life. His technical mastery is apparent in this engraving of two youths gleefully celebrating their recent capture of a mouse. Fine lines radiate from the lit candle while a dense pattern of marks makes up the background. This dramatic contrast between light and shadow contributes to the impression of intimacy in keeping with the theme.
