Gallery Label
La Revue blanche (1889–1903) was a Parisian periodical that provided a forum for the most topical issues of its time. Politics, society, philosophy, literature, music, theater and art were featured and debated on its pages. In 1891, publisher Thadée Natanson invited Bonnard to work for the publication. In this striking poster, one of his finest, the artist depicts a stylish Parisian woman holding a copy of La Revue blanche, just purchased from the newsstand behind her. Bonnard’s text, above the tousle-haired boy, announces that La Revue blanche is published monthly and sold everywhere.
With its flat expanses of white, gray and black, Bonnard’s poster advertises that La Revue blanche is read by those in the know—the fashionable, contemporary and forward-thinking.
