Gallery LabelCornelis Dusart made these prints to celebrate the conquest of the city of Namur by the Dutch in 1695. They retook it from the French under King Louis XIV, who had embarked on a long war with Holland to expand the territory of France on her northern borders. Local people are shown in various boisterous activities rejoicing at the liberation of the city from French oppression. The Woman of the Orange Faction refers to William of Orange, joint King of England and Stadholder of the Dutch Republic, who conducted the recapture of Namur.
