DescriptionFrontal bust portrait of a tousle-headed young man wearing a open-collared black shirt. Proper right side of face and neck in shadow.Gallery LabelChuck Close has focused on self-portraits and portraits of others derived from photographs for nearly 40 years. Close photographed composer Philip Glass in 1969 and used that image to make numerous paintings, prints and other works, including the woven silk piece exhibited here. The artist used a grid system to carefully transfer the image. From a distance, the portrait of Philip Glass reads as an amazingly accurate photographic image, but on close inspection we see that the image is a pattern of woven threads. The play between realistic image and abstract pattern is a recurring theme in Close's work.
