In his sequenced images, Duane Michals creates alternate universes not unlike the one Alice fell into in Alice in Wonderland, where objects shrink and grow in uncanny proportion. In each photograph of Alice’s Mirror, Michals adds a new reality reflected through a series of mirrors that are ultimately shattered. “I was dissatisfied with the single image because I could not bend it to a wider expression,” said Michals. “In a sequence the sum total of all the photographs suggests something that no one picture could say.”
