Gallery LabelJules Chéret, one of the most prolific lithographers of his time, has been called the “father of the modern poster.” His dynamic poster advertisements for cabarets, music halls and theaters like the Moulin Rouge, the Folies Bergères and the Théâtre de l’Opéra made him the most sought after poster designer of the late 19th century. His success launched an ever-greater demand for posters by younger artists, such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Charles Gesmar. Chéret’s designs are distinguished by their joyous, elegant and lively depictions of women dancers, singers, circus performers and, as here, ice skaters.
