DescriptionTall bridge bearing figures arches to top, lamp at lower margin, front, tall tree behind, right. Beneath bridge, line of houses on each side of cobbled street, workmen and other figures walking on sidewalk, left, and in street, fore- and middleground.Gallery LabelBorn in New York to German émigré parents, Lyonel Feininger was part of the avant-garde art community in Germany from 1887 to 1936. The Green Bridge, an early cityscape made during his residence in Berlin, depicts ordinary people going about their ordinary lives. The exaggerated perspective of the cobblestone street and the sweeping arch of the bridge combine to flatten the pictorial space through which sketchily outlined, flat figures move. The slice of wall and gas lamp, at left, suggest that Feininger viewed this scene from an upper story window.
