Gallery LabelHead of Woman-Reverie No. 2 is an example of André Derain's mature style. The young woman's reverie is suggested by the reclining tilt of her head and averted eyes, as she pauses, lost in private thought. The gesture of her delicate hand, so carefully poised atop her head, reinforces the mood of contemplation.
Derain was a principal member of Les Fauves or Wild Beasts, so named for their use of spontaneous brush strokes and brilliant color. Although Les Fauves contributed to the advance of modern art, by the end of World War I, Derain had returned to realism, traditional techniques and subject matter.
