The three abstract figures in Joan Miró’s lithograph float in an amorphous space brightened by a single star. Lacking mouths, they are voiceless, expressionless, anonymous beings drawn from the imagination rather than from the material world. Like his fellow Surrealists, Miró sought to reveal a higher or “sur” reality, the reality of the singular and subjective unconscious as described by the eminent psychologist and psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud.
