Gallery LabelGruel (Woman Feeding Her Child) was commissioned by Philippe Burty for an article he wrote on Millet’s etchings that appeared in the Gazette des Beaux-Arts, a new art journal. Burty was particularly impressed with this print, which reproduces a painting Millet exhibited at the Salon of 1861, as he felt it captured the delicate nuances of light and form seen in the original painting.
