Gallery LabelThe design of the lotus in The Ten Bamboo Studio inspired those in The Mustard Seed Garden published 50 years later. These two prints share diagonal compositions dominated by a lotus blossom and a leaf with worm holes. However, the boneless style and calligraphic outlines in the early manual give way to a rich bouquet defined by crisp outlines in the later manual. In The Ten Bamboo Studio, the poetic calligraphy was printed on a separated page in front of the image. The calligraphy, featuring a distinct style in each print, was popular among urbane readers.
