This splendid self-portrait shows Goya as a bohemian rebel, anticipating self-portraits of the 19th century Romantic period. His costume is fashionable, with wide lapelled coat and curly brimmed top hat, so this is not just a portrait of a rebellious artist, but also of a successful one. The soft touch of the etching technique brings the image to life and gives restlessness to the pose, dramatized by the contrast of the dark hat and hair with the brightly lit face and coat.
