Ellen Carey has long been motivated by ideas of process, abstraction and color. Informed by her knowledge of art history and the science of perception, her varied work includes hand-painted photographs, 20 x 24-inch Polaroid self portraits, cameraless photograms and a recent group of non-objective Polaroid Pulls. The work presented here is from a 1984-87 series, in which self-portraits are overlaid with boldly colored geometric patterns. Saturated, luminous and vibrant, these works stand as monumental emblems of the medium's kaleidoscopic possibilities.
