This pristinely ordered composition recalls Fernand Léger’s early training as an architect. The artist divided the space into rectangular sections, then overlaid them with a precision-contoured vase and both circular and scalloped forms. Léger chose the medium of color lithography to achieve crisp, flat planes of color. He felt that the forms expressed the mechanistic spirit of the modern world.
