Auguste Brouet’s delicate image of ballerinas on stage illustrates this cultivated pastime of Paris’ elite. In The Ballet, Brouet incorporates the unusual vantage point and awkward poses of dancers frozen in time made famous by the Impressionist painter Edgar Degas.
