The roof-like lid typical of this type suggests that it may in origin have been inspired by architecture. The decoration retains the motifs—masks, dragons and birds—of the preceding Shang period, but has become considerably more florid, with hooks and curls sprouting all over the place. The spiked flanges that divide the faces and accentuate the corners may have been pure design elements devoid of symbolic meaning.
