DescriptionHalf-length portrait of a man in a blue suit and white ruffled shirt, shown full face, seated in a chair with the right arm draped over the back of the chair and the left hand holding a stick. Red drapery in background.Gallery LabelSamuel L. Waldo studied with Benjamin West in London before establishing a successful portrait studio in New York in 1809. Three years later Waldo formed a business partnership with his apprentice William Jewett. The pair ably served the city's growing middle class by painting modest but flattering portraits until Waldo's retirement in 1854.
The fashionable gentleman and his wife (at right) appearing in these pendant likenesses are identified by their surname only. Given Waldo and Jewett's usual clientele, Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins were likely prominent New Yorkers. This portrait shows the amiable-looking Mr. Hutchins seated in a neoclassical side chair, a typical accessory in upper-middle class interiors of the 1830s and a standard prop in portraitists' studios.
