Gallery LabelLuigi Lucioni was born in Malnate, a small town north of Milan in the foothills of the Italian Alps. At the age of six, his precocious ability to draw was fostered at the local art school. After immigrating with his family to the United States in 1911, he further honed his artistic talent at the Cooper Union Art School and the National Academy of Design, both in New York.
As My Birthplace demonstrates, Lucioni took pride in his origins and in his capacity, in his words, to "create reality with the simplest means and with all essential detail." This etching's delicate, carefully controlled lines, meticulously rendered textures and precisely delineated shadows epitomize the artist's remarkable verism.
