Martin Hardie was a leading authority on English watercolors. Like James McBey, he served in the Great War (1914–18). This peaceful view of houses around a windmill in the Pas de Calais in northern France recalls some of Rembrandt’s compositions. The sky is left clear, defining the building’s presence.
