Gallery LabelIn this self-portrait, Elizabeth Layton skips down Christo's yellow walkway as delightedly as Dorothy skipped down the yellow brick road toward Oz.
Layton came to art late in life. She was 68 when she took a drawing class as an antidote to recurrent bouts of depression. As she drew, she discovered a wellspring, releasing a lifetime of ideas, images, and emotions. Layton's drawings, with their meandering lines, unconventional compositions, and fresh color, convey her renewed zest for life.
