Gallery LabelParisian-born Jean Charlot accompanied his Mexican mother on her travels to Mexico City in 1921. Between 1926 and 1929, he served as the staff artist for an archaeological expedition at the pre-Columbian Mayan site Chichén Itzá on the Yucatán Peninsula. He was inspired by Mayan art and its geometric abstraction of the human figure. Mother with Child in Front reveals the impact that Mayan art had on Charlot and also expresses his connection to his own mother, with whom he made his first trip to Mexico.
