DescriptionRed ground painted in gold and platinum with landscape motif.Gallery LabelThis plate and cup and saucer reflect the influence of Asian styles on European decorative arts; fanciful pagodas, exotic chinoiserie figures and rich gilding imitate Chinese and Japanese lacquer wares. The decoration of a solid color with gold and platinum was uncommon at Sèvres, apparently first used on a service ordered by the French queen Marie Antoinette in 1789. Both the red and black grounds are rare, with red being the rarest of Sèvres ground colors.
