DescriptionThree-quarter-length portrait of artist, left profile, gaze to spectator, dressed in dark blue suit seated before easel on chair in room with view of stucco church through open window in background; holds palette in left hand; in left background, crucifix above table with vase of flowers.Gallery LabelDietz Edzard depicted his friend Maurice Utrillo at work in the studio. In his left hand, Utrillo holds a palette with patches of red, yellow, blue, and white paint. The edge of a stretched canvas is visible at the far left. On the rear wall, next to a crucifix, hangs a completed painting of a white church. Brush in hand, Utrillo glances at the viewer.
Edzard’s manner of applying paint owes much to the gestural dabs of Impressionism. However, like Utrillo, he favored more subdued colors.
